Kids Caring

The animals' hope is with the next generation. We probably won't see the end of unwanted and abused animals in this generation, but the next generation is starting early and doing great things already. Katie's Place is lucky enough to be supported by kids -- groups and individuals -- who are raising money, helping out at the shelter and even asking, on their birthday, for gifts to be given to the animals instead of to themselves. These acts of selfless generosity really take our breath away. With kids like this growing up to take over, we know the animals are going to be okay. This page is dedicated to noting a few of the kids who care and are making a difference. They're an inspiration to us.

The Greybrook Academy Junior K-1 class has sponsored our cats for quite a while, raising money for it by recycling juice boxes. They sent us another donation and some cute pictures of cats that they coloured. Each cat is a different colour and pattern -- just like the Katie's Place cats!

Ali MacP. asked for donations instead of gifts for her 12th birthday party and sent Katie's Place a wonderful donation. Happy 12th birthday, Ali, and thank you from all the fur-babies here!

A very sweet young girl named Hannah set up a lemonade stand and donated all her proceeds to help the animals!

Madison and Paige worked hard at a garage sale, at recycling pop bottles, and asked around their family for donations to raise money for Katie's Place. They also made a video for Katie's Place that shows lots of beautiful cats and is even set to music -- hard-working and talented youngsters!

Meagan and Kenna raised money with their lemonade stand. Thank you Meagan and Kenna from the Katie's Place critters!

Ashley asked for donations to Katie's Place on her birthday instead of presents for herself. Thank you Ashley and Happy Birthday! Ashley visited the shelter, and fluffy, orange Gillian represented all the cats by showing Ashley how happy she is to have such friends (see their photo at right). Gillian rolled and nuzzled as hard as she could.

Everyone at Greybrook Academy raised money for the animals by holding a bake sale and also raffling off cakes. They presented a generous cheque to our grateful spokescat, Fletcher, at their morning ceremony on April 10, '08. A big thank you to Greybrook Academy students, teachers and parents!

Kyra, Molly and Kate are three youngsters who worked hard to raise money for the shelter, saving money from chores they did, for example. They presented us with a cheque for an admirable sum which will help take care of the grateful fur-babies at the shelter. Thank you, girls!

The Junior Kindergarten classes at Greybrook Academy have been diligently collecting their juice boxes and returning them for cash to send to Katie's Place since 2005. So they have not only helped the Katie's Place critters, they helped the environment by reducing litter! The kids have been special guardian angels for several of the Katie's Place cats with the money they've collected.

The Katie's Place critters received a box of goodies and a cheque from Nicole who asked for donations to Katie's Place's homeless animals in lieu of birthday presents for herself for her February 2008 birthday. Happy Birthday Nicole! The critters are grateful!

Seven-year-old Allie celebrated her birthday in the last weekend of February '08 and asked for donations to Katie's Place instead of gifts for herself. Happy Birthday Allie and thank you from all the Katie's Place critters!

Zachary had a birthday party on the last weekend in February '08 and asked for donations to Katie's Place instead of gifts for himself. Happy Birthday Zachary! All of us at Katie's Place -- two-legged and four-legged -- send our thanks.

An enterprising young artisan, Sinoah, made and sold jewelry to raise money for our animals.

A generous and talented youngster named Kat made and sold jewelry and raised quite a bit of money for our animals!

A big "thank you" goes to Fairview Elementary School in Maple Ridge. In February, they offered movies for the kids and the admission fee was not money but pet food for our homeless cats! The kids were generous and they brought us a lot of cat food and even some cat litter.

A big "thank you" from all the animals and volunteers to Andrew DeYoung who collected money for Katie's Place on his birthday and presented us with $173, an impressive sum! That amount should allow us to alter a litter of kittens before they go to their forever homes.

The kids at Alouette Elementary stepped up to help animals over the last year. Julie Hearn's Grade 5-6 class decided to help animals by raising funds for Katie's Place and the local SPCA. They held fund raisers ranging from a car wash to a homemade dog biscuit sale which brought the total they raised to about $700. They also held a food drive which gathered 429 items. Katie's Place and the SPCA will share the results of these kids' energy and ingenuity. If only our animals could understand what an amazing team they have out there helping them. They'd be so proud. And we are so grateful. The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Times covered the kids' work in a newspaper story.

We have another young friend in "Maddi" who requested gifts for Katie's Place for her birthday instead of for herself. Thank you Maddi!

The volunteers get a weekly email update on adoptions, admissions and other news. After the weekend of February 4, '07, the email said, "We a visit from Connor (the young man who started asking for presents for animals instead of himself since he was five years old). Today he dropped off more than $50 that he earned collecting pop bottles for Katie's Place. This brings his total to more than $300 that he has earned toward our new facility. We also received a young visitor last weekend who collected pennies and rolled them all herself to help care for the creatures at Katie's Place."
The caring and effort behind these donations means so much to us.

Katie's Place is lucky enough to have the support of a real go-getter in Connor H. Connor has been helping the animals since he was very young, choosing to ask for donations to Katie's Place instead of gifts for his birthday. Most recently, he had been saving up for something special he wanted when he learned that we're trying to raise money to build our new shelter. He gave the entire amount that he'd saved to us -- a sizable donation! But he hasn't stopped there. As of the third week of August, he'd raised $50 more by collecting bottles, and he plans to go door to door looking for more bottles. We are in awe of kids like Connor!

June 2006
Our animals are lucky enough to have another school working to help them too. The students at Alexander Robinson Elementary School have pooled their efforts to raise money toward building a new shelter. They collected more than $300 in coins; they've gathered Save-On-Foods receipts from the participating Save-On-Foods stores in Maple Ridge -- about $20,000 worth of receipts -- that we can redeem for supplies ($20,000 worth of Save-On-Foods receipts from store #935 and store #928 will give us $40 in Save-On-Foods gift certificates for supplies); and they've collected about $16 worth of Canadian Tire 'money'. They also held an in-school 'garage' sale where the older kids sold their used toys and books to the younger kids for 25 cents each and that sale raised $150. All this grew from one person's idea to help Katie's Place; Lindsay Stadnik from Mrs. Meek's Grade 5 class encouraged the rest of her class to help the shelter. Before long, Ms. Bianchi's class joined the cause. They arranged an account with the Haney Bottle Depot to credit Katie's Place with bottle returns. Then the classes held a contest to create a special Katie's Place button that people can pin on their lapels. The winning design by Katy Caverly was taken by Sterling Sales and Promotions to have 500 buttons made. They'll sell the buttons to their classmates for $2 each.

That's not all. The Animal Rescue Club at Meadow Ridge School has come through for Katie's Place again, raising $320 for our shelter through their efforts in recycling beverage containers and also collecting Save-On-Foods receipts! (They have raised money for us before -- see below). At a nickel per beverage container, they would have had to recycle 6,400 containers for $320! Phew! We are delighted to have such dedicated supporters. As the students themselves said, "Every penny will help these homeless and poor animals have a cozy home to live in, with water, tasty food and a warm comfortable home." These socially conscious youngsters don't stop there. They have a favourite web site that they visit daily because every time you click where indicated on The Animal Rescue Site, you help feed homeless animals, and when you click on any of the tabs at the top for Hunger, Breast Cancer, Child Health, Literacy, or the Rainforest, you can contribute toward those causes by clicking where indicated. These kids have huge hearts and are keen to help make this world a better place.

We at Katie's Place just can't believe what the kids of this community are doing for the shelter. It makes us feel proud and blessed.

On April 1, 2005, our spokescat, Swizzle, went to Meadow Ridge School (accompanied some volunteers) to accept a donation raised by the Meadow Ridge School Rescue Club. Swizzle was presented with a cheque for $275 that club members had raised, plus a box stuffed with Save-On-Foods receipts and Canadian Tire 'money' that we can redeem for supplies. Swizzle chose to let his volunteers handle the donations while he threw his efforts into a meet-and-greet. The presentation was done during an assembly attended by the whole school, and Swizzle strolled among the students and teachers expressing his thanks in his own feline way.

The members of the Meadow Ridge School Rescue Club stood at the front of the assembly with their teacher to present a $275 cheque.
Swizzle made the rounds while two bunnies, Pop and Cola remained in their cage.

Being Kind to Animals means...

Katie's Place held a contest for kids where they drew or wrote about what it meant to be kind to animals, the winner to be drawn at random. These kids are already showing that they understand how animals deserve kindness. We hung the drawings up at the shelter, as the photo shows.
Below are the written entries we received.

Feeding them when they are hungry.
Feeding fish as much as they need
Helping injured animals.
Give them cozy beds and more like love and toys
Help falling birds
Taking them home with you
Give them baths when needed
Give them good food

Being kind to animals is a great thing to do.  Playing, petting, taking care of them and lots of other things.  Anything you do to be kind to animals is a good thing to do.  Kindness to animals feels good inside.  I love being kind to animals.

Animals are a big part of God's creation.  I can help by feeding the dog.

        -Marta, 9

Being kind to animals would be like giving them food to them so they don't to starve to death.  If an animal like an dog was injured I would help it and put bandages on it.  I can even adopt the pets that don't have a mother. I would pet the cat and make it sleep.  I would give them shelter if they didn't even have a little house.  I can try to find there mother if I can. I can groom the horse.  I can give it a very fluffy, comfortable little bed. I wont make the pet work at all.  I would even make a little dog or cat or anything for the pet.  I'll teach it tricks too.

        -Melody, 9

People in Canada, so you see this dog I drew?  Well, I want you know that God will never leave a person and he doesn't hurt people who do bad things so I want you to know why you should take care of your pet so please do not hurt your pet as God gives us mercy.  I know that you will not hurt your pet and if anyone in Canada hurts an animal that is your pet then I will say to all of you to have mercy just like God gave mercy to you and me so please stop.  Thank you.

The reason to get a pet, is very quite simple, they are cute and fluffy, and want a friend, just like you.
Don't be alone have a friend.

        -Laura, 9

Show respect to animals.
And they'll respect you.
Feeding, grooming, caring,
Bring them to your home.
Little do you know,
That they have feelings too.
Cats or dogs, whatever you choose,
You will soon fall in love,
And have a new friend too.
If you want to buy an animal,
You'll have to cough up some dough.
But it will be worth it,
Trust me I just know.
The End

        -Alex, 9

I have a dog named Kenya,
And a hamster named Gus,
I love them both,
very very much,
To ever think they might have had no home, breaks my little heart,
Although I gave them shelter,
and ymmy food to eat,
They gave me many things.
That one can not replace
Adopt today!

        -Maddie, 9

If you adopt a pet,
It'll be good to you,
Mom and Dad,
and your siblings too.
It will love you,
with loads of effection,
and maybe you'll even,
make a connection.

        -Chris, 9

        -Michael, 9

Animals need houses
Some like to scratch on couches
people like to send
Animals to a friend.

        -Selena, 9

Animals are something you could love until the end. They are so special and they are something you would never want to lend. I have two and they are my best friends. Come to Katie's Place and you will find your new best friend!

        -Bailey, 9

If your thinking about getting a pet make sure you can afford it so it doesn't end up at a shelter. Adopt a pet from a shelter and bring it home and if you treat it nice, your pet will always love you.

        -Patrick, 9

Adopt an animal and save lives, animal lives. If you adopt a pet you will have a true friend forever. Some animals are killed because they don't get a good home or no one adopts them. Every animal is different in it's own way. All you have to do is feed them, care for them, bathe them, walks, and love them. Each animal is different in it's own way, price, size, mood, and most of this depends on how you treat them.

Animals are a joy to have. They are good friends and deserve to have a good home and family. I know because I own 4. 3 cats and 1 dog.
