Frederick's Story

Frederick was in sad shape when he was rescued. He had Entropion, a painful condition where the eye lashes are turned inward and constantly irritate the eye. He had ringworm on his face. He had rotten teeth, and he tested positive for FIV. All his problems were fixed by the rescue group that first found him, VOKRA. But the FIV can't be cured and meant he had to come to Katie's Place. Life is brutal for a cat without a home where he can stay warm and dry and enjoy nutritious food. Frederick was kicked out by his original person many years ago and had survived on handouts from sympathetic people. Despite the harshness of his life, Frederick proved to be a gentle, trusting, affectionate soul. He doesn't brood about the injustices he's suffered. He's happy just to have a dry bed and a full tummy. He leans into a caress with pleasure. There were too many years with no one to give him any pets. Now that he's safe and loved at last, he's quiet and undemanding. He stays out of the way and he doesn't complain when the rambunctious youngsters, Potter and Weasley, bounce off him during reckless games. He only wants a safe, peaceful life. That and a bit of affection, that would be heaven. He may find a home. If not, we'll do our best to make him feel loved.

Feb 9/09
Frederick has been coping with bout of cat flu. He's such a tender soul, it was inevitable. Arriving in a new place is stressful and if ever a cat is going to come down with cat flu, that will be the time. We monitor them and medicate them and they recover. The flu bug is ubiquitous, but when cats are content and in good physical condition their immune systems serve them well. Our longer term residents remain unaffected while newer cats beside them sniffle in their beds.

May/09
Frederick recovered fully from the cat flu and he has proven to be a very placid and loving soul. He enjoys attention and can usually be found sitting nearby when we're in the Boys' Pen. If we give him some pets, he leans into them eagerly, soaking it up. First thing in the morning, he's by the door waiting for us, watching eagerly through the screen.

Sept/09
Frederick likes attention but he has let us know when we've crossed the line and become intrusive. A fellow can only take so much handling! He pretty much spent the summer on his back. He likes to spread out, upside down, whether he's on the porch or in the room. He has a habit of sprawling right in front of the door. When we go in, we have to nudge him with the door until he gets the hint and moves so we can open it. Perhaps he grows tired of waiting for us and simply lets himself slide to the floor for a nap, all fours in the air, right where he sat. To him, it would just make sense to snooze where he is.
