Freddy's Story

Freddy is content by himself, but he has also been seen snoozing peacefully with his roommates.

Freddy came to us in June 2007. He'd been a homeless cat hanging around someone's property and he'd been fighting with her cats. When she took him to a vet to have a wound looked at, they tested him and he was positive for FIV. So he came to Katie's Place. Freddy has the proverbial redheads' temperament. He can be a feisty little hot head who isn't afraid to take on another cat. He's been seen posturing in front of a new cat in the pen as though saying, "I dare ya to cross this line!" Yet he's an endearing little monkey too. He can be charming and friendly, enjoying a visit with people and showing his soft, sweet side. Freddy gets along with everyone in his communal room most of the time and he has found a home and family in Katie's Place. It's unlikely that anyone will want to adopt him since he has FIV. So this stocky little redhead with his short ears and long tail will be safe with us for as long as he needs us.

In his video below, Freddy was very pleased to get some attention and he purred happily as he was petted.

May/08
Freddy has mellowed since he arrived. He no longer feels the need to posture in front of the other cats with a show of bravado. He has no wish to argue with anyone. He's not a member of the gang of cats who all snuggle together to nap. He might join them one day. But so far he likes to curl up in a nest on his own or sit in solitary meditation by himself. He's placid and unshakeable. When we take his photo it's hard to get him to open his eyes and look at the camera. No amount of calling, whistling, finger-snapping, or toy-waving impresses Freddy. He just opens his eyes sleepily for a moment as if to say "you're still here?" and then he returns to deep mediation, unperturbed.

Freddy was funny today. For quite a while, he was kneading one of the boys' favourite chairs with such feeling and resting his mouth on the arm of the chair. We caught the tail end of it on video. It was hard to see if he was biting down on the chair or sucking on it. But when we looked, there was a little damp spot on the arm. Who knows what he was dreaming about while he was doing that? Silly boy!

Jan/09
When we moved to the new shelter, we had to remember to bring Freddy's favourite beds. We actually tried to leave as much of the old furnishings behind as possible so we could literally make a clean start. But Freddy's beds had to come. He's a lazy boy who spends most of his time snoozing. We have to wake him up for photos and, unimpressed, he can barely be bothered to open his eyes. He opened them all right when we cleaned his ears one day. He cried in protest, and adding insult to indignity, we cornered him in his own tiger bed. We could see him making a mental note to skedaddle the next time he spies a human wielding Q-tips.

Sept/09
Warmer weather seemed to wake Freddy up. He went from near-hibernation to almost-active. On a few occasions, he was wide awake and ready to visit when people arrived. He sat and watched them with piercing intensity, looking about a inviting as a gargoyle. But those who know Freddy would recognize this as his friendly, I'd-like-to-get-to-know-you face.
