ASSISTANCE DOGS & TRAINING INFO
If you already have a dog that you would like to train to assist you with physical disabilities or hearing impairments, there are several local / state organizations that provide such training. Their parameters and criteria differ, so it is recommended that you contact them directly for more information. Not all dogs, particularly German Shepherds, are suited for such training, thus must be evaluated first. Neither of these groups provide dogs...only training. SW German Shepherd Rescue does not offer assistance dog training. That said, many certified dogs were rescued dogs and do very well.
It is not always possible to know whether or not a dog will take well to the tasks needed; however, some show more of an aptitude than others. Still, there is no guarantee that the dog you adopt will be a good candidate. Since we ask our adopters to make a lifetime commitment to their adopted GSDs, you must be prepared to keep your companion, regardless of whether or not you are able to certify him or her as an assistance or service dog.
