Skijoring fun!
Don and I took a bunch of dogs to Creamer's on Tuesday. 2" of new snow, blowing conditions and flat light all made for interesting runs. We ran most of the dogs that didn't get to run in the fun run on Saturday.
I took a team of Chanel and Loon along with Brandy from the shelter. We did the 1.4 mile and as we were coming home, Don went out with a 3 dog team so we took off after them but cut off at the .5 mile turn back to the truck. Brandy did excellent and found a new home today.
I then got "brave" and took out the following team:

Borax Misty (SCL)
Crowe

Borax and Crowe are 2 of my fastest dogs. But the trail conditions were very slow so I figured that Misty could keep up....and keep up she did!! She didn't have any trouble at all keeping up with Borax on the soft trail and other than getting distracted a few times with loose dogs and another skijorer with one dog, she did really good. We did 3.2 miles and had a lot of fun.
Of course, she wasn't all that tired and that evening (as I do every evening!!) I let her loose with Izzi and Ivy and they play and play for hours. Misty then comes in the house to dry off as they do a lot of rolling around in the snow. She loves to be brushed so she is getting brushed every night and her coat is looking beautiful. For awhile she had a pink caste to her fur and I'm not sure what that was all about....her belly is still pink looking but she also does this wild thing where she will get the chain between her legs and leaps HIGH into the air with the chain as a balancer. Quite entertaining to watch. So, I'm thinking that maybe her "pinkness" is from the chain. If anyone has any other ideas I would love the hear them. I've got several white and cream dogs and have never seen the fur with a pink tint.

The last race of the season was the ASPA end of the year fun run and barbeque on Saturday. Races of all different distances were offered. I ran 3 dogs in the 4.5 mile race.

Robin Blackberry (SCL)
Casper (shelter adoptee from 2 years ago).

Even though it was warm (30+) and the trail varied from icy to debris strewn to smooth (but a great trail considering our recent wind and warm weather!) all the dogs did great. BB continues to blossom up front. She got scared at the start line again when AJ went to stop my team. She got tangled up a bit and AJ had to take off her neckline after the countdown. But it was all in fun and she shot off the start line like a pro. All the dogs pulled hard the whole way. ( Casper has really progressed this year. He is still shy around most people, but he is a driving force and good leader, in my yard and at 3 years old he will have many years of fun. ) We passed a team that had gone out ahead of me and decided they really didn't want to do this....then we passed Amy Carroll and her one dog at about the mile mark. BB was totally professional and never even looked at the other dog team. She still doesn't understand gee/haw and took the turn with Robin but that will come with time. We placed 1st with Don a couple of minutes back in 2nd with another 3 dog team (Daikon, Raisin and Chert.....2 siblings and an uncle!).

There were a lot of teams there with shelter dogs or SCL dogs. It was great to see.
Thanks to my dogs for a great season...to Don for being there this winter in training, racing and support and to all the people who have given the shelter dogs a second chance.

More Skijoring Fun! The next to the last fun race of the ASPA season was tonight. There were a variety of classes and distances to choose from. I decided to do the longest offered at 5.2 miles with the following dogs:

Robin Blackberry (SCL)
Crowe

Both Robin and Crowe will be 9 years old in another couple of months. BB will turn 3.

What a great team. It was pretty warm and the trail was extremely icy in places and debris strewn in others. My team was awesome!!! They all worked really hard and passed several teams. We caught up with Andy Seitz and his 2 dog team right at the 12 mile turn. It is a very sharp turn and we crashed as we spun around the corner. Andy waited until we got up and followed us down the trail. We soon caught up to other teams and I think we ended up passing 4 teams altogether. Robin has always been a dog that passes great and usually picks up speed after we go by. Blackberry followed his lead each time and she was a driving force tonight. Robin got every gee/haw command and BB followed his lead. She will turn into a nice little lead dog.
I was very proud of my dogs. The heat didn't seem to bother them too much. No one dipped or trotted. They were tired at the end but all tails were wagging. BB wasn't nearly as freaked out at the start with people around. It is good to see her gaining confidence around others.

Skijoring Fun!
5 of us went out this morning skijoring from the borough building up the Chena River and back. Over 4 miles round trip.
Tom McGrane with 3 dogs
Theresa Hollingsworth with 3 dogs (one of which was adopted from the shelter a couple of years ago)
Sara Elzey with 2 dogs....both of which were adopted from the shelter
Don Kiely with 2 dogs
and me! with 2 dogs..Chanel and Blackberry (SCL)

We all took off pretty close one after the other. Don ended up passing Theresa and Tom as Theresa had a small tangle and then she lost her ski! Sara and I came up behind her and waited while she had to go out onto the "ice" on the Chena River to retrieve her ski. In the meantime Don has made it to the turn around andwas patiently waiting for us all to catch up.
We got our dogs turned around except that Tom's wanted to keep going up the river and when they did finally come around they divided themselves and tripped Tom...as he fell, SNAP, went one of his ski poles!
Going back down river was uneventful with everyone keeping their skis on and we all skied back up the ramp within a minute of each other.
I didn't neckline Blackberry and Chanel. There was one time that BB wanted to head to a frozen "open" lead and ended up behind me but she soon charged back out in front. She did great and all the dogs (and people) had fun.

Blackberry keeps on running. This little dog is amazing. I took her out today in a 3 dog skijor team. We were down on the river through town and up into Ft. WW on the Chena River.

Loon Blackberry (SCL)
Chert

I didn't neckline the 2 leaders. I find it a lot easier to turn around when they aren't necklined. They don't get tangled up. I wasn't sure how BB would do without a neckline, in lead, in a strange place. Well, she was great. We went by people walking, people skiing, people walking loose dogs and dogs barking from yards. She backed off a couple of times in curiosity but I just told her OK and "on by" and she kicked back up into front, hard on the line. (Loon, of course, always the professional, will pass anything without a glance!) Don had taken out a 3 dog team ahead of me and we all met at the turn around. After a few tangles we all got going again with Don in lead. I passed him and we lead the way back to the truck. BB didn't give a glance at passing Don's team, the loose dogs, people or skiers. I am very proud of her.
And of course, she didn't even seem tired at the end.

Day 3 LNAC
Awoke to a cooler morning but once out on the trail it seemed warmer than yesterday.
Borax got to sleep in the barn last night and of course, Robin and Blackberry (SCL) slept in the house. She has become a regular house dog at night and is very calm and relaxed in the house.
We went out first today. I was a bit afraid of seeing moose, but didn't see any along the trail. Had a little help from 2 kamikaze squirrels that sped across the trail in different places to give my dogs a little extra jolt of speed.
I was very conservative today. I didn't want to fall, break a pole, or loose a ski....all of which has happened to me in other races.....I had a minute over all lead so knew I had a nice cushion. I just let the dogs run their pace, did some marathon skating and double poling on a fairly icy trail and just concentrated on staying over my skis!
It was a nice clean run but the dogs were hot. Borax dipped some, but not terrible. Robin trotted up the hill as he was getting warm....but Blackberry (SCL) was charging the whole way. She didn't blink an eye when the 2 boys (I had them up front and BB in wheel) nicely passed the 4.5 mile turn to head to the 5.9 mile turn.
We kept our lead and finished the LNAC in first place in the 3 dog skijor division. It was sad that there weren't more entrants but maybe next year there will be although they are changing the skijoring course from 4.5 4.5 and 5.9 miles over the 3 days to 5.9, 5.9 and 7.7 miles over the 3 days. I know that I won't be doing the skijoring next year in this race. I train my dogs to go short and fast.....
Thanks again to Don for being my best buddy and love and all his help and support.

Limited North American Championship.
Day 1: (4.5 miles)

I decided to only skijor this year as it was going to be a hot weekend and I have too many dogs that can't tolerate the heat well. It was a tough decision who to take in the 3 dog skijor (because of the heat) but I picked Robin, Borax and Blackberry(SCL).

DAY 1: (4.5 miles)
We went out in the #2 position. 2 other 3-dog skijor teams were racing. One of the teams balked within 1/4 mile of the start and they withdrew and didn't finish the course.
It was a VERY hot and sunny morning. It got up to 47 that day at the hall although it wasn't quite that hot for the skijoring as we go out first at 11 am.
Robin had a slack line going down the hill. Borax and BB did great. Robin just didn't seem into it today and he even broke into a trot coming back up the hill. Borax dipped some, but BB drove hard the whole way. I ended up in 1st place.

DAY 2:
We went out #1 today because of our first place time yesterday. It was a bit cooler, but I soaked the dogs down with water right before the run. Robin was on FIRE today. He was sooo driven. Borax was too hot today though. He dipped more and seemed tired. Blackberry again, was incredibly driven and wanted to be up in front with the lead dogs. We charged up the hill and finished quite a bit faster than the day before. BB never looks around or gets distracted. We passed quite a few photographers and people standing along the trail. Borax and Robin are so professional that they don't even look at bystanders. BB used to shy away from anyone along the trail, but not any more!!
The trail was very icy. I had to double pole a lot and caught myself from falling several times.
I go into day 3 with a minute lead over the 2nd place person, but anything can happen. (Last year I broke a ski pole in a bad fall just a mile into the race and barely hung onto the lead!!).
Hopefully I can report another great day after tomorrow's race.
Thanks to Don for being my handler and fun partner!

Skijoring fun.
I loaded up 10 dogs today (plus Ivy who is the cab dog) and headed to the hall.
I skijored with 3 different teams. 2 teams of 3 and one team of 4!!! FUN!
We all did 4.5 miles each time.

Team one:
Robin Jazz
Blackberry (SCL)

This was an awesome team. But Jazz is still favoring his wrist so after today he is off for the rest of the season. Blackberry wasn't at all affected by the heat (Jazz really was, but I know this about him) and Robin didn't care either!! BB was focused the whole time and drove hard with her tug line tight. Carol Kaynor thought she might be injured, but I saw no indication of that today. We flew around the course in good time.

The 2nd team had Casper and Pippi my shelter adoptees.
Casper Pippi
Crowe

This was also a good team, but Pippi got overheated. I stopped several times for them. Crowe is also sensitive to the heat so he was happy to stop too. It didn't bother Casper...maybe because he is all white??

The 3rd team was extra fun.
Beans Loon
Chanel Chert

This was way too hot for Chanel, my wheezer dog. We stopped several times for them to dip snow and catch their breaths.
When we went out we actually caught up and passed a 6 dog pointer team! I think I surprised the musher when I went by on skis instead of a sled! All the dogs were very professional.

I'm debating doing the Limited. It is supposed to be even warmer. I think I could use Robin and Blackberry and they would be fine...not sure about that 3rd dog though!

A quick note about BlackBerry. (SCL)
She had been at another musher's home for almost 2 weeks. This weekend was the NP winter carnival Race #2. Carol Kaynor ran BB in her 4 dog team. BB is still pretty shy with most people. Carol said on the first day she worked hard most of the time, but seemed to loose confidence a few times within the run. Carol finished 5th on day 1 in a VERY competitive field.
On day 2, I saw them go up to the line and BB was just charging. But Carol said she thinks she might be a bit injured in the front end. Seemed to run with her head up a bit and not be totally driven as she normally is. But Carol moved up a spot and finished 4th overall.
I have BB back here again. I think she gained some very valuable experience at Bonnie and Carol's place, but she has become a big part of my heart and is so totally devoted to me (even after being gone for 2 weeks) that I had decided to bring her back here.

Training day.
I loaded up 16 dogs and headed to the Musher's hall. Don is in Juneau for another day so he missed out on the fun!

My first team was an experiment. Misty has run lead in skijor teams and had done well, so today I put her in lead in a 6 dog team!

Loon Misty (SCL)
Beans Millie
Topaz Casper

Misty did great. She is not the best at line out and insisted on being on the right (she is a left running dog!) so that is where she stayed. (she croweded Loon a bit to the left, but Loon held her own and it worked out OK) We took off great even with all the hub bub at the track (there were around 10 other trucks there). We did 4.5 miles. With Casper and Topaz "pushing" from the back we were going a bit too fast for Misty. I kept my heels down most of the time. We did have a surprise when we came around a corner about 1.5 miles from the finish. There were 2 skiers in the middle of the trail and a little black dog up ahead of them. I hollered "TRAIL" "Get your dog!". I think I scared them!! They jumped off the trail, the dog stayed in the middle of the trail and Misty really wanted to check it out, but Loon took her by and the little dog lept off to the side. I had to stop and fix a tangle with Casper then, but Misty and Loon stayed nicely lined out. She was tired coming up the hill. I think the speed is just a little too much for her. But I was very proud of the little girl. I had some help getting back to the truck and Misty nearly jumped on the guy's legs for a hello! So nice to see how far this little dog has come.

I took out 2 other 5 dogs teams both for 4.5 miles. Blackberry is at another musher's home for training this week. I miss her!
