An update on my 4 foster dogs.
Licorice (male) and BlackBerry (female) continue to thrive and gain weight. Blackberry is looking great. She is at a good weight and her coat is becoming a beautiful sleek and shiny black. I can let her run free and she comes when I call her. She is very devoted to me but shy with others. She will bond strongly with whoever adopts her.
Licorice is doing well. He still has a ways to go on his coat though. It is still very rough. I have them both on soloxin for thyroid and that has made a world of difference. I can also let him loose and he is good about coming when I call. He is more on the shy side but a big goofy lover.
Misty and CrackerJack are doing great. When I first got them I could barely pet them. I had to grab their chain and very slowly go hand over hand to their collars as not to spook them. Now I can let them both loose!!! Misty will come when I call her but I need a food treat to catch CrackerJack. He is still a bit leery but is coming around quickly. Misty loves pets and belly rubs. She will follow me around the yard and loves to run and dive in the tall grass. She is a REAL charmer. It will take awhile for someone to break into her shell but she is a very sweet and personable dog. I have not had either of them in harness yet. They have both gained a lot of weight. Misty, who had NO hair on her chest, belly and the inside of her legs, now has a lot of white fuzz. Yea! Both of these dogs just needed good nutrition. They both have a long way to go to peak health but they are changing quickly and learning to trust and love.

Last night with the help of Don Kiely, I ran a 6 dog team on my 4 wheeler that included 2 of my foster dogs: Licorice and Blackberry. It has been about 6 weeks since I rescued these 2 emaciated dogs from the Fairbanks Animal Shelter. They have been neutered and spayed and have gained weight and are looking great. Their coats are still a bit rough, but that will change over time.
They didn't quite understand being loaded into the truck and Blackberry was wild and hard to harness in what I perceived to be her excitment to run. Both dogs did very good. We only did 2 miles. Blackberry is awesome. She is quite small though, but other than wanting to run in the middle, thus crowding Licorice, she was tight on the line the whole time and very driven. She is also very fast and even when I gained speed coming back down the hill, she didn't falter. She is going to be a great little sprint dog. Licorice is a large, gangly, teenager. His gait doesn't look all that good at the moment but I think with lots of exercise (he is pretty high strung) he will muscle up and smooth out. He has good drive and tight on the line. I think Blackberry will run up in lead no problem. I will try her there next time and keep you posted.

I have 4 foster dogs and here is the update.
Licorice and Blackberry. They are both pointer crosses. They are siblings and were both turned into the animal shelter for euthanization because they were in such bad condition. Jeanne ran bloodwork on Licorice and it came back that he was "simply" starving to death. The owner was persuaded to re-sign the dogs over for adoption and I ended up taking them both. They were both very emaciated with lots of hair loss and frostbitten ears and tails. Open sores were on the legs of both dogs. After 5 weeks the dogs are doing great. They have turned into very social dogs and I can let them loose in my fenced yard with about 8 of my other dogs and they all get along great. They both come when I call them. They are very high energy dogs and Licorice likes to constantly spin on his chain. I'm planning on putting up a pen so that he doesn't have to be on a chain.
They are both on soloxin for thyroid.
The ex-owner said that Blackberry (female) was run as a team dog and Licorice was run as a wheel dog. She is petite and weighs 40 pounds. Licorice is tall and lanky and should weigh about 50-55 pounds. They are spayed and neutered.
They are 2 years old.
My other 2 fosters are fairly new. I have only had them for 10 days. They came from a kennel where overpopulation was out of control and the fellow couldn't feed the many dogs that he already had. I took 2 of the dogs, Misty a small white female and CrackerJack a male. Both are 1 year old. Misty has a lot of hair loss on her underside and scabs and mangy hair on her body. She is white with brown eyes and weighs 28 pounds. With proper nutrition she will look beautiful. She is VERY cute with prick ears. But she is very shy and fearful. She is coming around quickly though and should turn into a sweet little dog. CrackerJack is a larger male. 38 pounds but should weigh at least 50. He is brown with one blue eye and one brown eye. He is very shy also, but not as fearful. He is easily petted and will turn into a nice dog.
I will update when I take all these dogs out for a bikejor or on my 4-wheeler.
