Welcome to the Second Chance League

The Second Chance League is a group of Fairbanks mushers focused on finding permanent homes for sled dogs. SCL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We work with dogs exclusively from the municipal animal shelter in Fairbanks, evaluate them, foster them, and train them with our own dog teams. Many of these dogs have excellent bloodlines. Our goal is for the dogs to be successful. We strive to match the right dog to the right owner.

Welcome to Winter!
After a fairly quiet summer at the shelter there was a rush of dropping off dogs. But a lot of them got adopted to good homes so we were happy to hear that. We will continue to run dogs throughout the winter and hope for a season where a lot of dogs aren't dropped off.

If you would like to adopt or foster, please be sure to fill out an application form from the website. We can start looking for a dog to fit your needs. Be it, mushing, skijoring or a pet/companion-there is a dog out there just waiting for your compassion.

Breaking Up is Hard to Do
Break up is long in coming this spring in Fairbanks. Here it is the 3rd week of April and there is still a lot of snow on the ground. Some people are still skijoring or sledding with their dogs. But the current 50 degree temperatures will soon put an end to that.

The shelter has seen quite a few dogs come through but a lot have been adopted too. SCL has pulled several dogs into our program and many other huskies have been adopted outright.

Spring and summer is an ideal time to adopt a new sled dog. You have a chance to bond with the dog and your other dogs accept them into their pack. You can run, bike, or hike with your new dog and have that bond even stronger.

As summer comes upon us, it is important both physically and mentally to keep your dogs stimulated and happy. This might be the summer you fence in a large play area. Or decide to start hiking with a couple of dogs from your yard each day. Socialization and play time is very important and summertime is the ideal time to get those dogs off chains for a rousing game of fetch (yes many huskies love to play ball!) or hide and seek.

Even early morning cooler 4 wheeler runs are great for the dogs and keep them in top shape for the fall.

Happy Spring. May all your dogs be happy, healthy and stay in great physical shape.

Thank You!
To everyone who has adopted a dog in the last month, whether through SCL or directly from the shelter. We have had many come through the shelter and quite a few have found homes either through SCL or through direct adoption.

Also, thank you to all of our wonderful donors. Your donations allow SCL to continue to take dogs from our borough shelter and have them checked out, neutered or spayed, rabies shots and microchips. We are always grateful for your support!

Copper finally made it down to Wyoming to his forever home. We have been getting pictures back and he is having a blast in his small team and living the life of a house dog with sledding privileges.

Our annual meeting is at 6 pm on Tuesday, February 8th. It is at Silver Gulch. You are welcome to come and talk about our organization.

Happy 2011!
May this year bring everyone happiness and good cheer! And may it bring a shelter dog a new home where it can run, play and interact with a family.

Lots of dogs came to the borough shelter in December. We are trying hard to find homes for many of them.

SCL and its volunteers ran two teams recently and several have found wonderful homes. Without our volunteers and people devoted to the huskies, it would be hard to continue. But we have donors that care, volunteers that come out to help us run the dogs, and people that spread the word about the wonderful world of owning a rescued dog.

Happy New Year and please consider adding a new dog to your home. The animals both inside and outside at the borough shelter right now are great dogs. Friendly and anxious to get out of the shelter and into your heart!

DONATIONS NEEDED

With more dogs entering our program each day, our medical cost (spay, neuter, microchip, medications, etc.) are rising. Your donation will help insure the future health and happiness of these eager to please dogs!
