All of the good work of MCAL is performed by dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers are business owners, homemakers, farmers, and professionals in a variety of fields - in other words, very busy people.

Monroe County, WV is a small, rural county with no animal shelter or government animal control agency. The all-volunteer Monroe County Animal League was formed to attempt to deal with our county’s pet overpopulation problem through spay/neuter and adoption programs, and through educational programs to help local residents become more responsible in caring for their pets. In the past 6 years alone, over 2,800 animals have found caring new homes and/or been treated through MCAL’s spay/neuter assistance program.

In 1999, we began working with the North East Animal Shelter, a no-kill shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. During the last 6 years, 1,800 unwanted Monroe County puppies (and a few dogs, kittens and cats) have found high-quality adoptive homes through NEAS. We continue to send hundreds of puppies to NEAS every year despite the number of animals no longer reproducing in Monroe County due to our active spay-neuter and rescue programs.

In 2004 we began a cooperative effort with several no-kill shelters closer to West Virginia. Hundreds of dogs have found new homes through these programs. Day trips are required with these programs. Usually one driver is able to handle all driving requirements. It’s always nice to have a second person ride along.

In 2006 we began a relationship with a second shelter, Save A Dog, located in Massachusetts. This program allows us to transport adults. This will be a great boost to our efforts. This group will meet us in Maryland! As with our other local transports, one driver is able to handle all driving requirements. It’s always nice to have a second person ride along.

In order for our effort to continue and improve we need more dedicated volunteers. Please consider donating the gift of time, which is "community action at its very best". This is an excellent opportunity to act locally, to make our community a better place for us and our animal friends to live.

Monroe County does not have an animal shelter. Most of the pets you see as ‘available for adoption’ are fostered by our volunteers in their homes. These dogs are made part of the family until a forever home can be found.

MCAL will also post "owner surrenders" for people needing to place their pet in another home for varying reasons. These pets are noted "owner surrenders" and MCAL can not accept any responsibility for the information posted and makes no representations of the owners. Adopters are encouraged to visit with the pet, obtain vet records, etc. prior to finalizing an adoption.
