Prevent Euthanasia Through Spaying & Neutering

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S.
Each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born.

As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. As a result, millions of healthy, loving cats, dogs, kittens and puppies face euthanasia as a form of animal control. Others are left to fend for themselves against automobiles, the elements, animals and cruel humans.

What can you do to stop the suffering? Help Educate those that do not understand that spaying or neutering is the only answer to the problem of pet over-population. Help us help the animals.

The P.E.T.S. program was developed to assist and encourage the practice of spaying/neutering by offering discounted rates for these services.

How does P.E.T.S. work?

  • Everything is arranged through the Julia Wagner Animal Shelter.
  • Call (540) 635-4734 for more information about locations of participating vets and their reduced rates.
  • Make payment to P.E.T.S. and receive a certificate.
  • Call a participating vet and make an appointment for your pet.
  • Take the certificate with your pet to the appointment.
  • The Shelter handles all paperwork.

P.E.T.S. is a win-win program for both you and the shelter. Your financial savings are substantial. The shelter will receive fewer strays, fewer abused animals, and fewer animals to euthanize. In 1999, the euthanasia rate for dogs was 42% and for cats 69%. Help us reduce these numbers.

Spread the word about our P.E.T.S. program. Reduced rates are available. Call the shelter at (540)635-4734 for more information on this program.

P.E.T.S Stats

Approximately 1300 animals have been spayed/neutered since the program began in 1994. In 1999 alone, 299 animals went through P.E.T.S. So far this year 122 cats and 54 dogs have been spayed or neutered through this program for a total of 176. Total for program: 1077. These numbers are through May 2001.

What Can you Do?

Take away excuses and myths about spaying/neutering and have a happy, healthy pet! Please be a responsible pet owner.

  • Prevent litters by having your pet neutered/spayed.
  • Do not allow your pet to run loose. This prevents accidental breeding and protects your pet from being stolen or lost.
  • Spayed/neutered dogs and cats live longer, healthier, happier lives.
  • Spaying female dogs and cats eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer.
  • Neutering male dogs and cats reduces the possibility of prostrate cancer.
  • Neutered pets are less likely to roam or fight.
  • Neutered pets will NOT get fat or lazy.
  • Spaying/neutering will NOT affect a pet's instincts to protect its home or family.
  • Reduced prices for dog licenses when your pet has been spayed/neutered.
