How to Adopt

Please take a few moments to read this explanation of our adoption policies and the steps that make up the process. You may be surprised to find that adopting an animal is a more involved process than you expected.  Therefore, it is important that you understand that the process is the same for everyone and is aimed at giving our animals the best possible chance of finding permanent homes.

The Humane Society of Warren County adopts out to residents living in adjacent counties. In compliance with Virginia state law, only animals that have been altered may possibly be adopted out of state.

Make friends - Meet the cats, dogs and other animals available for adoption. An employee will gladly help you if you would like take dogs for a walk or play with them in our outdoor play area. An employee will assist you taking cats out of their cages. Feel free to ask questions about many different animals. We want to help you choose a new best friend who will fit in well with your family and your life-style. Did not find the cat, dog or other animal friend of your dreams? Put in a request application. We will call you when a likely match comes in.

Apply - Once you have chosen an animal, fill out an adoption application (there is a separate application for dogs and one for cats). It is designed to help make sure you and your new best friend are a good match. Staff will review the application with you. All family members should meet the animal, and if you live in an apartment you will be asked to provide permission from your landlord to have an animal.

Pick up your new best friend! - You will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee.  If the animal is to be altered before going home, your new family member will be ready to go home the day and time you and your counselor agree upon.

Please Note: As a general rule, we cannot hold animals for anyone because of the tremendous demands of our kennel space.

Adoption fees

The fee for cats adopted from the shelter is $35 and $145 for dogs. Other animals range from $5-50. It is the law in Virginia that all dogs and cats adopted from shelters must be spayed or neutered.

This fee helps offset the costs of:

  • Providing shelter, food, medicines and other care to the animal during his stay at the shelter.
  • Combination vaccination for dogs and cats
  • Kennel cough vaccination for dogs
  • Deworming medication for dogs and cats
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Microchip identification
  • Spay/neuter fees (when applicable)
  • Warren County dog license

Please note: This list is representative. The actual vaccinations, medications and other treatment each individual animal receives depends on the needs, condition, age and medical history of the animal and may exceed or not include all of the above.

All Warren County residents must also purchase a license ($5 - $8) for dogs over the age of four months each year.
