NewsWe currently have 3 hamsters looking for homes, at the moment. The first is another female Syrian hamster called Hannah, in the last few months she has had two litters of babies, equalling almost 20 babies (she came to us nursing 9 babies), now Hannah is looking for a home where she can be pampered as she deserves to be. Hannah currently has a pending adoption. Next is a teddy bear hamster called Othello, he is a sweet little guy, a bit jumpy at times but easy to handle. The lastly is a Chinese dwarf hamster called Abednego, he was attacked by other Chinese dwarf hamsters but is on the mend now. Both Othello and Abednego can be adopted with complete cage set up's. He is a sweet hamster, easy to handle and a speedy little guy on his wheel. Check out their Petfinder pages for more information on them.
We are no longer accepting new animals (unless in emergency), since the rescue will be closing. We are very thankful to all our adopters through the years and are very pleased we were able to help so many small animals find their forever homes. While the rescue is closing the e-mail account connected to the rescue will remain open, in case any of our past adopters have any queries or need help. Two frequent comments we got during the years were 'I did not realise there were rescues for rodents' or 'why is there a need for a hamster rescue?' Not many people realise how many hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits etc end up in shelters and rescues each year, so please check out your local shelter or rescue before taking that trip to the pet store and THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Who We AreGiven A Chance Hamster Rescue is a small family run rescue based in and around Allentown, PA. We offer the hamsters that come into our rescue a one on one relationship based on the well being of the hamster, thus limiting the number of fosters we can accept at any one time into our household. The hamsters are given large cages and are always housed on Carefrresh bedding.
Our small animals come to us from a variety of places; overcrowded shelters, other rescues and owner turn-in. We are a no-kill rescue, any rodent that comes into the rescue, receives the best care possible, including veterinary attention if necessary and stays with us until a new home can be found, no matter how long it takes.
We only accept hamsters into the rescue from this point on, the only exception maybe gerbils in case of an emergency. We can no longer accept rats, chinchilla's, degus, guinea pigs or rabbits and we have never accepted mice or ferrets into the rescue.
Adopting a friendIf you see a hamster on our site, you would like to adopt or if you have questions about the rescue, let us know via e-mail. We will adopt our animals to anyone that passes our adoption requirements, stated below and that can travel to meet us in or around Allentown, PA, to pick up the animal. You must be over 18 years old to adopt an animal from us.
We do have a few requirements before we will adopt out any of our hamsters; first we conduct an interview via e-mail, then we will set up a time for you to come and meet the hamster that interests you. If all goes well and you decide to adopt the hamster you will need to fill out our adoption contract and show us the cage you plan on housing the hamster in. Providing everything is satisfactory your household will have a new little friend to take home.
There is an adoption fee of $10 for all our hamsters, this fee helps to support the rescue by covering some of our expenses, such as veterinary care and basic supplies (any money donated goes straight into the rescue).
All our adopted hamsters go to their new homes with a 10 liter packet of Critter Care or Carefresh (our preferred type of bedding for small animals) and a care sheet about small animal husbandry.
If the new owners have any concerns about their new pet, they can contact us at any time via e-mail, we do not forget about our pets once they have been adopted.
Surrender PolicyIf for whatever reason you find you can not keep your hamster and would like to place them up for adoption, contact us as soon as possible via e-mail. We can usually find a place for the hamster and the hamster will remain with us until he/she finds their forever home.
Ways to HelpSince we are a small rescue one of the main ways we need your help is to spread the word about Petfinder and our rescue. If you know anyone interested or looking for a small animal give them the Petfinder web site address.
