Stray Cat

Dear God, please send me somebody who'll care.
I'm so tired of running and sick with despair.
My body is aching and filled with such pain;
And dear God I pray, as I run in the rain
That someone will love me and give me a home,
A warm cozy bed, and food of my own.

My last owner left me alone in the yard...
I watched as they moved, and God that was hard.
So I waited a while, then went on my way
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
But now, God, I'm so tired and hungry and cold;
And I'm so afraid that I'll never grow old.

They've chased me with sticks and hit me with straps
While I run the streets just looking for scraps.
I'm not really bad, God, please help if you can,
For I have become just a "Victim of Man."
I'm wormy, dear God, and I'm ridden with fleas;
And all that I want is an Owner to please.

If you find one for me, God, I'll try to be good.
I won't scratch the carpet; I'll do as I should.
I'll love them, play with them, and try to obey.
I will be so grateful if they'll let me stay.

I don't think I'll make it too long on my own,
'Cause I'm getting weak and I'm so all alone.
Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
'Cause I'm so afraid, God, that I'm gonna die.

I've got so much love and devotion to give
That I should be given a new chance to Live.
So dear God, please hear me, please answer my prayer,
And send me somebody who will REALLY care.

Cold Weather Tips:

Here are some tips to help make sure that your dog or cat stays healthy and comfortable during the winter cold:

Top Ten Cold Weather Tips

 Brrrr…it’s cold outside!  The following guidelines will help you protect your companion animals when the mercury dips.

1. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.

2.  During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.

4. Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.

5. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

6. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

7. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

8.  Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him—and his fur—in tip-top shape.

9. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center more information.

10. Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

Who We Are

The Queens SPCA was formed in October 1994.We are a  animal protection organization and a firm believer that adopting a pet is a privilege. Just because we are small in stature, doesn't mean we aren't big on love. Each of our adoptable animals is cared for as if it were part of our family.

If you would like to attend one of our meetings, please call 902-350-2444 for the time and place.

Donations

The care and protection we provide for animals in need can only be realized with the help of a lot of great volunteers and Donations from the private and commercial areas. If you or your organization would like to help, please send a cheque or money order to :

Stray Cats

We are committed to pursue all reasonable efforts in order to find a home for all adoptable animals that come in our care. Considering that our mission is to prevent the suffering of animals, it is our belief that adoptable stray cats deserve a home, and getting them neutered and adopted is our ultimate goal.  Stray cats exposed to diseases, hunger, weather elements, human cruelty and predators have a life of misery; ignoring that is tantamount to a cruel death sentence. Euthanasia may be considered for un-owned animals that are severely injured or diseased or that are wild.

Puppy Mills

You may see the following or something similar in your local newspaper or just tacked to a telephone pole alongside the road

"ARE YOU STUCK WITH A LITTER OF PUPPIES?"

Be advised that this is a common ruse used by puppy mill operators to get unwanted puppies as objects to sell for profit.

Don't be their supplier - Spay or neuter your dogs!

If you think you know of  a puppy mill in operation please advise your local animal shelter or animal welfare agency. You may also wish to check this website for more information about the puppy mill problem in Canada:
