Why Rescue?

The sad reality is that large breed dogs, like the Saint Bernard, are typically the first to be euthanized at shelters through out this country for no other reason than their size.

What an ironic fate, these beautiful dogs that at one time rescued human travelers are now desperate for humans to save them. Yes, the Saint Bernards that are world famous for their heroic attempts at saving lives in the snow covered Alps of Europe are nowadays themselves being the ones needing a helping hand.

Saint Bernards are large dogs, large hairy, slobbery, dogs. The little 'furry' puppy quickly grows up. When people who didn't fully grasp the concept decide that they are no longer able - for what ever reason - to provide a home for the dog there should be another option available.

We try to provide that option as often as we can. Sadly, there aren't enough of us, or enough money in the 'coffee can' to possibly provide the temporary home, veterinary work, or even food for all the orphaned saints. We do what we can, when we can, and sometimes even a bit more.

Through rescue, these dogs are given that much needed second chance at finding a real loving 'forever' home. For some we are literally their last option, others come into rescue directly from a home that for a myriad of reasons can no longer provide for a dog.

Our goal with each one is to provide that much needed step in finding a warm loving home for as many of these guys as we possibly can.

Saints that have entered rescue are placed in temporary 'foster' homes through out the state and given not only needed medical attention, but also the warm loving environment if a real family.

The rescue dogs are evaluated and trained (to a certain extent depending on length of time in rescue). The time spent in rescue also allows us to better match a dog to a family. This should give everyone a better chance at finding that one 'forever' home.

We truly are trying to make the world a better place, one saint at a time.

If you would like to offset some of the costs involved in providing the necessary care for these gentle giants, please consider making a donation. Throughout the web site are paypal links that allow a secure encoded link to make donations directly to NCSBR.
