Smokey Graduates at the Top of his Class!
Smokey was part of the first class for Brevard County Sheriff's Department's new Paws and Strips program. Dogs from three Brevard County shelters received training from specially selected inmates, under the guidance of experienced dog trainer, Corporal Fred Abby.
This ongoing program picks dogs from Brevard County shelters that are otherwise adoptable, but lack basic behavior skills, and puts them through obedience training.
The first training class was a success for the dogs and the inmates. Smokey, our first dog to participate, graduated on November 16th and left the graduation ceremony with his new family.
The next group of graduates should be ready for adoption after the Holidays.
The SPCA is keeping a list of interested adopters, and the graduating dogs will be placed with the most appropriate family. The selection won't be based on the order of the list. One requirement for the adoptive family will be an ability and willingness to continue to work with his training.
